September My Real New Year

I’ve often wondered what it is about the month of September.
Maybe it’s because, as kids, we were trained for it — new clothes, new notebooks, new teachers, new rules.
But it was more than going back to school.
You were moving up.
A new grade. A new classroom. A new year. Another chance to see what you could do.
A built-in reset button disguised as school supplies.
Or maybe it’s the air.
That first cool breeze cutting through the leftover humidity…
washing away the smell of sunblock…
and gently whispering,
“Alright, sweetheart. The party’s over. Let’s get back to life.”
Whatever the reason, September has always felt like the real reset month to me.
Even more than January.
And definitely more than any champagne-soaked resolution I ever made and forgot by the second week.
Looking back, a lot of my major decisions have carried that same September feeling.
Moves.
Career shifts.
Bold pivots I swore I’d never make.
Even the CSJ rebrand.
There’s something about that fresh-start energy that snaps me back into focus.
It’s not pressure.
It’s not panic.
It’s permission.
Permission to try again.
Permission to recommit.
Permission to get off the bench and back in the game — even if the last season nearly took you out.
That’s what I love about September.
It doesn’t demand perfection.
It doesn’t care how messy your summer was.
It just opens the door, blows the whistle, and says:
“You still in?”
And every year, somehow, I am.
That’s why September has always been my real New Year.
It doesn’t arrive with glitter.
It arrives with clarity.
And honestly?
That’s always worked better for me.
